Why Shiatsu Works ? It is a very important and interesting question that why Shiatsu and other acupressure techniques works? As we know that when we take a medicine it starts a chemical reaction inside the body, which kills germs or nutralise harmful chemicals present in the body. When we take a herb it improves our immune system to make body itself able to fight with the disease. But what happens when we press on a point in the body to treat a disease? Let us see some facts releated to why shiatsu works: Fact 1: The man has made enormous number of machines. Do any machine have powers of regeneration and self repair ? The answer is "NO"!! But the human body has powers of regeneration and self-repair which no machine can equal. For instance, when a foreign object falls into the eye, tears immediately wash it away; when a bite of food or a liquid goes into the trachea, the person naturally coughs to dislodge it. Scrapped skin grows back in a few days. In other words, the body can do so much of its own repair that we need no repairmen. So, pressing specific points takes advantage of the body's wonderful natural healing powers. The pressure gives an information to the brain to restore normal functioning of the body cells. Fact 2 : We know that the materials composing the different part of the body are called tissues and that tissues are made up of microscopic units called cells. Body structures and functions are many and diverse, yet together they compose a single unit, an "integrated whole", which has a single ultimate goal "-Survival Of Itself and its species". So, all the tissues and cells are connected to each other by some means. A mutual interdependence exists between the body and its member parts. That is to say, the highest welfare of the body is dependent upon the highest welfare of each of its parts, down even to the smallest cell. Conversely, the welfare of individual part is contingent upon the welfare of the body as a whole. In equation form, this principle might be stated as follows: Body Health « System Health « Organ Health « Tissue Health « Cellular Health Now as we know, all of our internal organs are composed of cells and all the external parts also composed of cells, and the external parts of the body gets energy from internal parts or organs to do useful work. We can say that energy flows from cell to cell through a definite pathway or channel from internal organs to external parts of the body. In shiatsu, these particular channels or pathways of energy are known as meridians. Whenever there is an imbalance in the flow of energy through a meridian, the person becomes ill. In shiatsu there are 12 key meridians through which the vital energy (KI) flows. Every meridian have huge number of Tsubos or points that can be stimulated in order to balance the flow of inergy (QI or KI). In shiatsu, when a tsubo (or point) is pressed an electric signal travels through the related meridian and gives an information of illness to the brain, which in turn send a signal to the related internal organ to establish a balance of KI throughout the related meridian. That's why the pressure cures illness. Fact 3 : We see in our daily life that a very small seed give birth to a huge tree. A small egg gives birth to an animal. Why ? The answer is, because a seed and an egg has a complete information related to the development of its specie. Again, when tree is grown up its stem, branches, leaves, fruits, flowers all have information related to the developmenmt of seed. The same thing is true for animals. In the words of a chinese medical scholar Zhang Yingqing: "The root, stem, flower, leaf and fruit of plants and the head, limb, organs ans tissues of animals (including human beings) may be considered as holographic embryos in different development stages to grow a new organism. In multiple cellular organisms, the structure between a single cell and their whole body can be divided into different developing stges. The whole body of an organism is in the highest development stage and the fertilized ova and somatic cells are in the lowest development stage. They are two extrems of development. Now the holographic embryos of higher maturity bear higher similarities among them and share more biological characteristics in common. The ear, eye, nose, tongue, face and foot are similar miniatures of the whbole human body. Therefore, all of them are jointly used to show the physiological and pathological disturbances of the body. For example, as a miniature of the whole human body, the hand is a highly development holographic embryo. The pressure points and areas on the hand not only can show the physiological and pathological distrubances of their corresponding parts of the body but also can serve as the targets to apply local acupressure to treat diseases of corresponding parts". This is the biological significance, for "why pressure cures illness?" Fact 4: As we know that our body has 12 key meridians which are connected to their corresponding internal organs. The 12 regular meridians have their definite routes to travel with a fixed sequence of top-to-bottom connections for transporting qi and blood. At the same time, there are many tsubos (acupressure points) distributed on all the regular meridians. Now, 3 meridians originate in their corresponding organs in the chest and travel to reach the tips of fingers, 3 meridians originate in the tips of the fingers and travel through the lateral aspect of the arm to end in the face and head. Therefore, 6 out of 12 regular meridians link their corresponding organs directly to the hand. Secondly, the 12 regular meridians are end-to-end linked with each other. The 3 meridians originate in the face and head and travel to reach the tips of toes, and the remaining 3 meridians originate in the tips of toes and travel to reach chest and abdomen to make an endless circuit for communication. The endless circuit of 12 regular meridians can ensure the circulation of qi and blood in the circuit and conduct an intimate cooperation among various tissues and organs in the body. Therefore, because all regular meridians are connected with each other in sequence, stimulation applied to the acupressure points of a meridian not only can promote the circulation of qi and blood through the meridian itself but also can activate the circulation of qi and blood through other meridians to adjust activities and functions of the whole body. |
